The Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (CCPC) has given the go-ahead for the sale of the Inishowen Independent newspaper and website.
Formpress Publishing submitted plans to buy D&D Media, the owners of the Buncrana-based newspaper, in April.
The CCPC decided in August that a full investigation was required ‘to establish whether the proposed purchase would lead to a substantial lessening of competition in the State’.
“Following this examination, the CCPC has determined that the proposed transaction will not substantially lessen competition,” a statement said.
The deal, now approved by the CCPC, is now subject to further approval by the Minister for Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sports and Media.
Formpress Publishing owns a number of local and regional newspaper titles across Ireland, including the Donegal Democrat and Donegal Post.
The Inishowen Independent was initially launched in March 2007, it is one of several regional newspapers in the area. The newspaper’s print edition is published every Tuesday.
